The Human Development Network (HDN) is pleased to announce the release of training modules on Statistical Capacity Building: Monitoring and Evaluation in Support of Development in CD form. (Available also for download here, zipped file ~280MB).
This set of four animated audio-visual modules is designed to introduce local government planning officers and research collaborators to useful methodologies and tools for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on development outcomes in their municipalities.
Module 1: Human Development. Module 1 covers a discussion of the human development framework, the importance of a results monitoring and evaluation system and the components of such a system. Results of a pilot exercise to gather municipal-level human development indicators are presented.
Module 2: Descriptive Statistics. Module 2 is an introduction to descriptive statistics including background concepts, types of variables and their measurement, and how to use statistics to efficiently summarize and describe numerical data.
Module 3: Spreadsheet Software. Module 3 demonstrates the use of spreadsheet software to process data, including working with formulas, using built-in statistical functions, and creating charts and graphs.
Module 4: Communicating Results. Module 4 provides basic guidelines and useful tips on writing good reports, such as policy briefs, and making effective oral presentations. The module also includes an annex on the key features of a Local Statistical Calendar.
The HDN is an independent non-stock, non-profit, non-government organization which produces the Philippine Human Development Report (PHDR), the national counterpart of the Global Human Development Report published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Six volumes of the PHDR have been published – in 1994, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2008/2009 – each of which have put “people” back at the center of the development debate. Past volumes of the PHDR may be downloaded from www.hdn.org.ph.
